The PTO sponsored BMX assembly was a huge hit with the Franklin student body.  The performers showed off their talents by doing tricks, jumps and flips all to the audience’s delight.  Their message of wearing a safety helmet, eating healthy, and staying in school was also well received.  They showed the kids that if you work hard and practice, you can be good at anything you want.

On May 18th, the Franklin Elementary School PTO hosted a Tree Dedication Ceremony to honor the life of Detective Tarentino with a plaque and tree that is planted by the reading garden outside the school. The plaque reads, “Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure.”  In addition to his tireless service to the entire community of Summit, Detective Tarentino was especially beloved by the students and faculty at Franklin where he ran the D.A.R.E program for several years. The event was attended by Chief Weck and the Summit Police force, Mayor Nora Radest, June Chang and members of the Summit Board of Ed, the Franklin PTO and Principal Dalia Mirrione.

They ended the season strongly by competing at the Summit Elementary School Chess tournament on May 23.  Earlier in the season they competed at a friendly tournament against Lincoln-Hubbard’s chess club.  The season was a success having offered over 20 instructional sessions and a chance to play and learn with team mates and friends.  Thank you to Angie Farid, Ashleigh Koss and Maureen Leuenberger who co-chaired this year’s club.

Playground Goal Reached We did it!  We raised $50,000 to make our playground dream a reality!  I’m so proud to be a part of this amazing and generous Franklin community – there’s nothing we can’t accomplish when we work together!  Through skillful negotiations I was able to get the equipment company to add an extra overhead rings event for us, see the updated picture below.  We’re currently getting the necessary approvals to install the new set and we’re on track to make that happen this summer.  We’ll welcome the 2018/2019 school year with a brand new playground for all to enjoy! Beauty & the Beast Encore Performance On Saturday, May 5th about 15 cast members from this winter’s Beauty & the Beast musical performed at the annual SPARC Pancake Breakfast.  The students sang Belle and Beauty & the Beast in the Summit High School cafeteria.  We couldn’t put on our musical without the support of SPARC so it was nice to give back to this wonderful organization. It was a fantastic performance for the parents and spectators at the pancake breakfast.  Way to go to all our Franklin stars!

Right before Spring Break students in grades 1-5 were transported to outer space in the inflatable planetarium brought to our school by presenter Matthew Meyer of “What’s Out There… a Planetarium Experience”.  He brought the cosmos to life and wowed the students with his presentation on the stars and galaxy.  The most fun was getting in and out of the planetarium dome itself!
