January 26, 2016 (Summit, NJ) – The Summit Principals’ Association, in conjunction with the Summit Educational Community, has launched the Illuminating HEARTS4HOPE Campaign. The initial campaign will benefit the Hassert Family. An active, involved and caring resident of Summit, Carol Hassert, the Summit High School principal’s secretary, is facing her second cancer diagnosis in two years. Her three children all attended the Summit Public Schools. Illuminating HEARTS4HOPE is a luminary campaign. Today through February 12, luminary kits will be sold via the attached order form, which must be returned to a Summit Public School main office by noon on Friday, February 12. Kits are sold on a first-come first-served basis and advance orders are suggested. Quantities are limited. Each kit includes 15 candles, luminary bags and assembly instructions, which can be picked up at Wilson Primary Center on February 10, 11, or 12 from 3:30pm until 8:00pm. The campaign will conclude with luminaries being lit, in front of participants’ homes, the evening of February 14, 2016. Classical Music 2.0 launched at Franklin School in September and is an expansion of the original SEF sponsored project funded last year.  Tchaikovsky at Tea Time will now be added to the beautiful sounds of Bach, Debussy and Mozart already playing in your child’s everyday classroom environment. We hope to present classical music in a positive and accessible way to our students while: promoting creativity and cognitive function; assisting teachers with classroom management; and creating a future generation of classical audiences. In addition to the new CD, the nurse and specialist teachers were provided with the three compact discs from last year:  Bach for Breakfast, Debussy for Daydreaming and Mozart for Your Mind.  All of these CD’s are available for purchase on Amazon (log into Amazon through www.franklinparents.com to earn money for the school).  You too can play Bach at breakfast or include Mozart in your homework routine! Many of you have seen the Free Little Library on Blackburn Place. It is a  place to ‘Take a Book. Leave a Book.’ Friends of mine gave me a Free Little Library for Christmas.  As of Tuesday, January 26th it will be operational.  For now it will be kept in the lobby by the FLIC.  After all the landscaping and hardscaping is complete it will be moved outside. What: Join Us For Family Technology Night! Who: Fourth Graders and their Parents/ Guardians When: Wednesday, February 3rd  6:30- 8:30 PM Family Technology is funded by the Summit Educational Foundation (SEF).  It is being offered at all of the elementary schools this year.   Mrs. Rego and Ms. Stochaj will be hosting one session for any and all fourth grade children. All children must  be accompanied by at least one of their parents/guardians.  We will meet in the Franklin Library (PLEASE NO SIBLINGS). Program Objectives: Parents will become familiar with the fourth grade curriculum in technology. All participants will have hands on experiences using district software and programs. (Scratch, Enigmo, Wixie, Google Docs, and GoMath) Parents and children will participate jointly in learning activities. Daniel Kirk’s Visit What a day! Thanks to our generous PTO all of Franklin’s first and seconds enjoyed their visit with author/ illustrator Daniel Kirk. Here are a few prompts to help guide you to discuss the experience with your child. Who are the three important people in creating a book? (answer: author, editor, illustrator) His first Library Mouse book took a long time to develop. What was the process like? (answer: editor’s suggestion, wrote ABC story in rhyme, found a book like it in a store- canned that idea, saw a mouse in a school library, wrote mouse book about a mouse named Sniff told in rhyme with friends, editor said get rid of friends and change mouse’s name, FINALLY: Library Mouse is born) Can you draw us a mouse?

Franklin School Cub Scout Pack 360 will be collecting gently used children’s books (Pre-K to 8th Grade) as part of Summit’s annual — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, Monday, January 18th. During the week of January 11-15, Franklin Families can drop off books in our collection box outside the main office at Franklin. Books will be delivered to the American Red Cross at 12:00 noon on January 15th, so all books MUST be donated no later than 11:30am on the 15th.
