Now that the colder days have arrived, our lost and found racks and bins are overflowing! If your child is missing a sweater, a coat, or something else, please send a note to your child’s teacher to help your child find the missing item. The Lost and Found is located by the side entrance of the gym, next to the exit to the playground. Please don’t forget to label all your children’s clothing, so the lost items can be easily returned to your child. All items that are not claimed will be donated to the Junior League of Summit. Are you a third grader? — Do you love art SO much that… you wish art class was twice a week instead of just once? — Would you like to make art during one of your lunch/recess periods every week? Then this is the choice for you! Ms. Bruns will offer art club as an optional activity for interested third graders during Friday lunch recess periods. We will meet in the art room at 11:30 where you will be invited to bring and eat your lunch. After eating, we will participate in a teacher directed activity. Some projects might include drawing, crafts, painting, or 3D projects. We will meet on 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5 and 2/12. An announcement will be made as a reminder. 3rd Grade Postcard Lunch Club Does your child have an interest in geography? Can our club get a postcard from all 50 states? That will be our goal. We will also learn about the states by doing research! Postcard Lunch Club will meet on Tuesday 1/5 and 1/19 and Wednesday 1/27, 2/3, and 2/10. Children will eat and work in FLIC. Full Day Kindergarten Lottery applications for the 2016-2017 school year are now available. Full Day Kindergarten in Summit is tuition and lottery based. Yearly tuition is $7175.00, with discounted rates if you quality for the Federal Free or Reduced Lunch Program.  If you have or know of a child who will be eligible to attend kindergarten next year (age 5 by October 1, 2016 and a Summit resident at the time of the lottery drawing) and are interested in attending the full day kindergarten program, please complete the attached application. Hour of Code is coming to Franklin School. While the rest of the world will be experiencing the Hour of Code the week of December 7th, we have so much happening at Franklin School that we will participate during the week of December 14th. During library class everyone at Franklin will get to try some computer science activities. Check them out at code.org BUT try not to let your children see the website so we can experience it for the first time together. Your child will receive a bookmark stating what each grade level tried in library class!

Would your child like to do some animal researching the library with Ms. Stochaj? We will explore animals that live in Ethiopia. Hopefully we will be able to Skype with a former Franklin student who is a photographer for National Geographic who was just in Ethiopia. We will eat in FLIC on 12/15, 12/22, 1/5, 1/19, and 1/26. The Franklin Fair planning committee will have their first meeting in January and there are still a few open positions: Games Committee – Responsible for setting up 10 games in the gym and contracting with Fun Services for outside inflatables. Children’s Raffle Committee– Responsible for collecting monetary donations from Franklin community, purchasing toys, and wrapping in baskets. Birthday Cube Committee – Responsible for purchasing stuffed animal prizes for the game. Does your child want to learn a little more about the accomplishments of Ben Franklin? “The Space” is inviting 3rd and 4th graders to find out.  We will do a bit of research to share with the school in honor of his 310th Birthday. Monday December 7th & Tuesday December 8th This is an annual fundraiser where our kids have the opportunity to shop during the school day for 2 holiday gifts for someone special.  The Holiday Surprise Shop is stocked full with an array of gifts that range in price of approx. $8 per gift.  Students are invited to bring their chore money to buy gifts so please have them bring in $16, in an envelope on the day their class is scheduled to shop (see Class Schedule below).  For financial assistance, please see Marta. Students and parents are all invited at the end of the second shopping day on Tuesday, December 8th at 3pm, to return after school to buy additional gifts from the leftover inventory.  This is a lot of fun for the kids and parents so please come by and support Franklin in this fundraiser! The Junior League of Summit thanks you and your school community for participating in our annual Thanks-for-Giving Baskets food drive. With the generous support of Franklin Elementary School and other area schools, we were able to provide 280 grocery bags to families through our partnering community outreach programs and help stock two local food pantries.
