Volunteer Opportunities

Lunch and Learn Survey for Grown Ups I have an idea to hold lunch and learn sessions for our Franklin learners next school year. This would mean that during our recess/lunch hour the learners would come to FLIC (aka library) to learn about something. I need your expertise. Do you have a talent or interest that you are willing to share with children? It could be work related (how does technology change us, what is the stock market) or it could be a passion that you have that you think children would enjoy hearing about (birdwatching, painting, electronics). Please consider joining in on the fun and learning by taking the first step and completing this form. Thanks in advance for your interest.     There is still 1 opportunity to be a part of the PTO Executive Board for 2015-2016 and 2016-2017!  This dynamic group of parents and teachers work together to move Franklin forward and provide our children with an environment in which to thrive.  Don’t think you are “PTO” material?  Think again!!  Available position is: Assistant Treasurer:  You would be responsible for all funds of the PTO, accurate recording of receipts and expenditures, present the budget and communicate the status to Committee Chairs – helps if you love spreadsheets and money, but neither is essential! The term is for two years, as Assistants become Primary in the second year. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Clara Jenkins at clarasjenkins229@gmail.com or 973-303-2287.

The Franklin Chess Club needs your help! We are in need of a volunteer who has knowledge of the game of Chess to be our point person for the Franklin after school Chess Club. Franklin participates in Chess matches against Lincoln-Hubbard School and Glenwood School in Short Hills. Mr. Gil has secured a promise of assistance from Lincoln-Hubbard and Glenwood School. This club is designed to provide students of all skill levels from Grades 3 to 5 with the opportunity to learn and play chess and have fun. The program typically meets once per week and is offered in the Fall and Spring and culminates in a tournament between other elementary schools.  The parent coordinator leads and supervises the program. Please help Franklin keep this program active! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Katie Darcy (kpandd@hotmail.com).

Many parent docents are still needed for Art in the Classroom, a PTO sponsored program, that runs October through May. Art in the classroom is a monthly program that introduces Franklin students to art history. All it takes is 45 minutes of your time to teach the class about a designated artist along with one of the artist’s famous paintings. The class will then create a project using the knowledge that they have gained from your lesson. All instructional and craft materials are provided and the time involved in preparing for the lesson is minimal. Pick a month and arrange with your child’s teacher the date and time of the lesson you will present. This is a great way for you to spend some quality time in your child’s classroom and have the opportunity to meet your child’s classmates. No experience necessary! Any questions, please contact Kim Leonard (kimkleonard@gmail.com) or Eileen Zyko (eileenazyko@gmail.com). Sign ups by grade can be found by clicking the underlined classes below:

We are still looking for someone to chair the Traffic Safety committee. There are lots of ideas in the works on how to improve the traffic safety at Franklin, we are actively asking people to obey the parking rules and not park on the other side of the street between 2:30 and 3:30, also do not park within 50 yards of the corners on Blackburn Place. We know it is difficult to juggle pickups and other commitments but the safety of your children is foremost in our minds. Last week there was a very close call on the cross walk when a boy on a bicycle was nearly knocked over.

The Recess Leaders program The program has 5th grade volunteers providing guidance and support to the 1st grade during recess by teaching and then participating in a variety of games and activities with them. The program will run for October and November and we need Parent Monitors to volunteer for 2-3 sessions. They will sit with the 5th graders at the start of lunch to chat through the games/activities they would like to play and then monitor the play on the field. The parents also need to attend a 30 min emergency training session on the 23rd Sept at 8.30am. Its a fun and very rewarding program, so if you would like to help out please contact Jo Weir joanna_weir1@hotmail.com (908 858 0974)
